A Lucky Escape

Life on the savannah is hard. Watch a wildebeest calf, perhaps only a few hours old as it literally finds its feet as it walks with its mother. Natural selection weeds out the weakest and least adaptable. And yet it’s not just about, strength or adaptability. Sometimes it boils down to social support structures or just plain luck. As we put our cameras away, a hyena tried to sneak in unnoticed and snatch the calf from its mother. It would have succeeded but for an aunt who put her own life at risk to charge the hyena. We caught the very end of that charge and had no time to zoom in. The calf survived to walk another day.

An East African safari should be about more than just seeing the wildlife. You should be able to experience it. Watching wildlife interactions is a huge part of a Kenyan conservancy safari that is quite unlike a standard safari.
