The Birthing of the Wildebeest Calves, a must-add to YOUR bucket list

While the Wildebeest migration and the spectacle of the River crossings from Serengeti to Masai Mara is a sight to behold, the birthing of Wildebeest is a must-watch phenomenon in the African wild. The Calving Season is the other side of the spectacular Wildebeest movement.

Our intimate knowledge of Masai Mara allows us to identify the best spots for the Birthing and offer a Ring-Side view of this thrilling experience.

One the best spots for the Birthing is located 100 meters from the Porini Cheetah camp.

You can expect to see 15-20 calves being born each morning in a short window from 08.00 to 10.00 am.

Being a natural event the intensity of the Calving may differ from day to day.

Highlights of the Calving Season

The Calving season in January and February, is a wildlife photographer’s dream. The sighting is intense and filled with the emotion of birthing and the joy of new mothers. During the calving season, there are about 8000 Wildebeest born everyday throughout the larger Masai Mara & Serengeti eco-system.

And the most amazing thing is that within the first few minutes the calves will be standing and in a few hours they will be running, trying to save themselves from the predators in the wild.

  • It is the least crowded season, with lowest rates of the year, making it a good time to visit.
  • Exciting action, drama and an unbelievable experience.
  • Increased predator activity makes it exciting for game viewing.

Reviews & Experiences

I visited Porini Cheetah Camp during June '22 and had heard a lot about it. But what I saw and experienced was much more than I had expected. The tents were very comfortable Food was spot on. We used to have dinner together and shared our game experiences. Staff was very courteous and prompt. Last but not the least the Banerjee Couple. The way the manage the camp was awesome. Hats off to them From Sanjay Desai.

We spent 3 nights at Porini Cheetah Camp and it was a fantastic experience. The surrounding wildlife conservancy was filled with game of all sorts in February 2022. And the game comes right up to camp so you don't have to drive far. We saw cheetahs, lions, leopards, elephants, zebras, and amazing birds. The tents are new and very comfortable. The rock formation right in camp offers a spectacular view of the river and surrounding plains. The manager (John) was gracious as were the owner/hosts... and the food was among the best we have had at any camp (we have been to 20+ camps). Highly recommend it. Our guide Jimmy Lemara (borrowed from Porini Mara Camp) was the best of the best.

Jui & Nirmalya were our hosts and treated us more like family friends. The camp staff (John, William et al) would do anything to make life enjoyable - drinks by the campfire, extra hot water - whatever. They also managed our flight connections. The food menus were exceptionally good. Our safari guides, Jacob & Jackson, were expert spotters, and took great care to find the animals and birds we found to be of greatest interest. Our trip to the Maasi Mara was memorable. Thank you for a most enjoyable stay.

Our extended family (11 of us !) spent three days at the Porini Cheetah Camp located in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy at the Masai Mara National Reserve from 1st to 4th February '22. We have been on Safaris several times across Kenya, Tanzania & South Africa but this was by far our most enjoyable holiday largely due to the warmth and hospitality of our hosts Jui and Nirmalya. Their deep love and knowledge of the Mara ecosystem was evident during our conversations around the evening campfire. Their skilled guides and drivers ensured that we had awesome game viewing with the luxuries of bush breakfasts and sundowners during the game drives. Jui & Nirmalya have trained their team very well and John, the unflappable Camp Manager, ensured that every small request was promptly attended to - without a fuss. One of the highlights of Porini Cheetah Camp is the outstanding food that they serve and we are all now trying to shed the extra kilos that we put on during our stay!
